Sharon School Gallery

On August 4, 2014 I received the following from Valerie Gallo Alvares: “I so enjoyed reading the site, brought back wonderful memories when I attended Sharon School and Church.  Those early years were a great influence. I still remember the lessons of kindergarten. “God is love… He gave his only begotten son…Jesus loves you…your body is the temple of God…” they formed the foundation of my life. Thank you so much for your labor of love.”

A few minutes later I received the following from her brother Morris. He wrote,  “Hi,  My sister, Valerie, and I were reminiscing about old days at Sharon school and came across your website. Happy to hear you are well. How is Rachel? I’ve retired and am currently in Tampa in transit to the Northeast.”

This reminded me of pictures that Rhoda saved. I thought they may be of interest to Valerie, Morris and other persons related to Sharon School who may fall into this site.  Hence this gallery of seven pictures.  (Click on the first one and it should begin a slide show of larger pictures.)

About Martin Lehman

I was born 91 years ago, the son of a Mennonite pastor and organic gardener in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. At age 10 I was baptized as a member of the Marion Mennonite Church. I own the “Old Fool” moniker because I want to walk the Jesus Way even though the world and much of the church takes me as a fool for doing so. In my life I have moved from being a young conservative to an elderly radical. I tell that story in My Faith Journey posted on my website.

Martin, I was touched and delighted upon reading the quote written by Valerie Gallo Alvares. It was in 1958-59, that I taught kindergarten at Sharon School. I had no formal training for such work so felt inadequate and unskilled. I did enjoy it, though and loved the children dearly. I remembered there was a Valerie in my class and I still could see what she look like in my mind’s eye, especially I could see her reciting her recitation at the graduation program. I imagined there could be any number of “Valeries” at Sharon School through the years. However, I went to my file and found the name “Valerie Gallo” on my student list! Many times through the years I have thought about those dear little people and wondered where they were, what they were doing, and, what, if any, impact I had on their lives. When they came to mind, I felt it was an opportunity to pray for them. These few words from Valerie brought tears to my eyes and I was felt so blessed by her words. Thanks much for sharing them. –Mary Louise Lehman

Mrs. Lehman, I was five, so you hit it right on the button. There was another student, Dennis with whom I later crossed paths, he is now a Doctor in Tampa. He brought our kindergarten picture to school at the end of senior year and disclosed who he was. Also, Nelson, but I’m not sure if Nelson was at Sharon School or at my other primary school after Sharon Sch. Anyway, I am on my third career after retiring twice from prior careers and currently work as an investigator. My adult children are gentle and kind, so know that your gifts to your students passed to the next generation and continue to grow as they reach out to their children. I touch base with Miriam Strong Valido every once in awhile via facebook. I warms me to hear from you. My love to you, Val.

Val, thanks for your response! It is so special that you took time to respond. I don’t remember a Dennis, but there was a Nelson in the class. Wilmer and I both say we are retired, although we continue to be active and busy. We have three children and two grandchildren. I was a stay-at-home Mom for many years and after the “nest” was empty I worked in a number of office settings. At the present I am taking care of the finances at our church. Many blessings! With my love, Mary Louise.
