Highlight 113 – Up the Hill

This is a sad week.  On Sunday, The Old Fool’s first cousin, Marcus Lehman, his wife Ferne and two friends were driving from church to a restaurant for a light lunch to be followed by Bible study.  Marcus was driving when he blacked out and the van swerved off the road.  He regained consciousness just before the van struck a tree.  Ferne died almost instantly while Marcus and the other two in the van suffered minor injuries.

There were no cousins living up the hill when The Old Fool was born on March 14, 1926.  But approximately nine months later, on January 5, 1927, the first cousin, Aldus, was born.  He was followed in the next 18 years by Walter, Jr., Grace, Sarah, Esther, Ruth, Naomi, James, Marcus, Miriam, John and Eunice.  The Old Fool named them because this family of cousins means much to him.  He was often a lonely younger child in his own home, but when he went up the hill, he was the older among the cousins.

Aldus and the Old Fool became close friends.  They went to elementary school together. Then their ways parted.  Aldus stayed on the farm and married Ruth, a local girl,  and The Old Fool went to Eastern Mennonite School in Harrisonburg, Virginia, served in Civilian Public Service, married Rhoda, and moved to Florida.

Aldus was ordained as pastor in Pennsylvania and The Old Fool was ordained in Florida.  After retirement, they discovered they had much in common.  The Old Fool and his wife were often guests in Aldus and Ruth’s home.  When Aldus was killed in a farm accident, The Old Fool was in a dilemma of whether or not to go to Pennsylvania for the memorial service. He and Rhoda decided to start driving north and go as far as they could.  When they arrived at the church, the family had reserved time for The Old Fool to speak.  They were sure he would come.

So the cousins who lived up the hill are bereaved again.  The Old Fool did not know Marcus’s Ferne well, but she reached out to him on Face Book.  She asked, are you the Martin related to Marcus?  and they became friends.  The Old Fool feels with Marcus, for he he knows what it is like to lose a beloved spouse suddenly.   You may subscribe to highlights by clicking on  http://www.oldmennofools.com/enews.php

About Martin Lehman

I was born 92 years ago, the son of a Mennonite pastor and organic gardener in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. At age 10 I was baptized as a member of the Marion Mennonite Church. I own the "Old Fool" moniker because I want to walk the Jesus Way even though the world and much of the church takes me as a fool for doing so. In my life I have moved from being a young conservative to an elderly radical. I tell that story in My Faith Journey posted on my website.
