Good news, and Sad

IMG_0402On dreary days Crystal will ask to be let out on her long tether so she can run a bit.  But on a sunny day she will ask to be outdoors so she can sit on the step in the sun.  That was the way it was today.

Eldon came home about midnight.  His younger  brother Mervin who lives in Palmyra, NY had invited his three brothers to fish with  him on Lake Ontario on July 1 and 2. Eldon was reluctant to go because who knew Rachel would be in Phoenix, and Khalid and I would be home alone.

The four adult sons of Roy Stoltzfus had never had the opportunity to do something like this together. The younger brothers really wanted their oldest brother to be with them and Eldon wanted to be with them so he took the trip.  He came home with good news and sad.

They had a really lousy, rainy, windy day for fishing on Monday and only caught 2 fish.  But the next day turned out to be a beautiful day on the Lake and they all caught some big fish. Eldon caught the biggest, a 28 lb King Salmon, But the joy of fishing was tempered by what Eldon described as the  “whale in the boat.”

When Lowell, Jay and Eldon arrived Sunday evening, June 30, Mervin shared with them that he had just learned he has prostate cancer and that on Monday afternoon between their fishing trips, he would need to see a doctor to learn more about the prognosis of his disease.

On Monday evening, he returned from the doctor to report that the doctor  told him he has a very aggressive kind of prostate cancer and that it had already metastasized into his lower back and hips.

The brothers were devastated by this news.  They gathered around Merv and cried and prayed for him and his wife, Sharon and their boys.  He has been referred to a cancer specialist at the Rochester Clinic and will learn more in the coming days about how they will fight for the best quality of life possible.  They have already started him on hormone injections to slow down the cancer growth.

Merv is 53 yrs old and has been the top salesman in his company for over ten years. He will have a lot of people to support him in the coming weeks and months as decisions are made about his future.  Merv has given Eldon permission to share this with family and friends.  Thoughts and prayers are appreciated.

Doggie toys and treats were among the many things that Mervin sold. He sent a bag full of specialties for Crystal.  She can be very enthusiastic when a member of the family comes home, but she was always gentle with Rhoda. She seemed to understand Rhoda’s frailty.

Rachel came home this evening from the Mennonite Assembly in Phoenix, AZ.  Eldon, Khalid, and his sister, Kassandra, met her at the airport.  They are out on the town. July 4 is Khalid’s birthday.

About Martin Lehman

I was born 92 years ago, the son of a Mennonite pastor and organic gardener in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. At age 10 I was baptized as a member of the Marion Mennonite Church. I own the "Old Fool" moniker because I want to walk the Jesus Way even though the world and much of the church takes me as a fool for doing so. In my life I have moved from being a young conservative to an elderly radical. I tell that story in My Faith Journey posted on my website.
