Yesterday I watched the TV program called “The View.” Five women spoke their minds. While the program title is The View, it seemed obvious to me that every woman on the panel had her own view. Television brings many different views of life into our homes, and we need to be aware of that.
The president has announced a change of action and a change of view toward Cuba. To get that done he changed the way diplomacy is usually done. He went outside the state department to use the services of Pope Francis in the Vatican.
A friend of mine sent me an article about the church and Pope Francis. The article reported that the conservative hierarchy of the Catholic Church is alarmed by their pope. He seems not to value hierarchy. Instead, he seems intent on following Jesus. He went outside the boundary and washed the feet of common people, inmates, those ill with AIDS, women and Muslims. That’s scary to some in the Catholic Church.
This is the season for Christians to celebrate the coming of angelic messengers. Just what did the host of angels proclaim to the shepherds on the hills of Judea? The translators of Luke 2:14 provide us with at least three options
“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men”
Or did the angels give glory to God because as sovereign God elected certain people on earth to be favored with the blessings of peace, as in the New International Version:
“Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”
Or did the angels glorify the sovereign God because God invites men and women of good will to join in bringing peace on earth as in the Douay-Rheims Bible:
“Glory to God in the highest; and on earth peace to men of good will.”
I favor the view the angelic message as related in the Douay-Rheims Bible. It is the English Bible of the Catholic Church. It is an old Bible version with which Pope Francis must be familiar. The pope is demonstrating good will to all people and is being viewed as a peacemaker among nations.
If all who claim to be Christian were filled with “good will” to all, they could join God in the fulfillment of the prophecy visions of Isaiah 2:4 and Isaiah 11:6-9. This Christmas let all Christians everywhere read the ancient vision and pray and work with Jesus:
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done,
as it is in heaven
(“As” is a powerful little word. It is used to describe what is done on earth as being the same as is done in heaven.)
